Welcome to the Heart of America Chapter of SGMP
The vision for SGMP in Kansas City began in 1987. On one particular day that Fall both Rod Sanchez, with the Kansas City Convention Bureau, and Jack Nesbitt, with General Services Administration, made calls to Mr. Ron Clausen, then National President of SGMP. Each were interested in learning more about how to form a local SGMP chapter and wanted to know if there others in Kansas City that shared their vision. Mr. Clausen brought Rod and Jack together and the chapter formation process was underway.
Rod and Jack met numerous times to develop a strategy to form a Kansas City SGMP chapter. It was agreed that Lahoma Yates, with the Greater Kansas City Federal Executive Board would be extremely helpful with her exposure to all government agencies. Lahoma shared their vision and suggested a mailing to all Kansas City government agencies indicating the focus and benefit of SGMP. The response to that mailing was overwhelming.
On January 20, 1988 a chapter foundation meeting was conducted at the Americana Hotel. This orientation meeting attracted over 50 interested individuals. Andrea Storey, then National SGMP Vice President, addressed the group on the benefits and history of SGMP. The meeting was a tremendous success and many of those in attendance made a commitment to join SGMP.
The next few months remained hectic. Interest in SGMP swelled within the local government community and in area hotels. On March 16th, 1988, the Heart of America Chapter of SGMP was chartered at the Kansas City Marriott Plaza Hotel.
A special thanks to these individuals who were instrumental in the foundation of the Heart of America Chapter. . . .
